Andrea Fraser: Art in the Age of the Plutocracy
Monday, 6 May 2019, 4–6 pm
ETH Zurich, Hönggerberg, HIL E 4
Organized by gta exhibitions & Chair of Karin Sander, ETH Zurich
Andrea Fraser is an artist whose work is characterized by an ongoing investigation of the power structures that are at work in cultural institutions, as well as the social, economic and psychological impacts these structures have on associated groups and individuals.
In this lecture, Fraser will focus on the intersection of cultural patronage, electoral campaign finance and plutocracy, based on her most recent book, 2016 in Museums, Money, and Politics (2018), which in 900 pages offers an unparalleled documentation of the political contributions made by the board members of over 125 major U.S. art organizations during the 2016 electoral cycle and its aftermath.
Andrea Fraser is Professor, Interdisciplinary Studio Area Head, and Chair of the UCLA Department of Art. Retrospectives of her work have been presented by the Museum Ludwig in Cologne (2013), the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg (2015), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona and MUAC UNAM in Mexico City (both 2016). Her most recent book, 2016 in Museums, Money, and Politics (2018), was co-published by the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, Westreich/Wagner Publications, and MIT Press.
