NAKED ARCHIVE LOTTERY—RESIDENCY AND EXHIBITION IN THREE CHAPTERS
The Stalker Nomadic Archive documents the actions and action sites of the collective Stalker / Osservatorio Nomade. Since it was founded in Rome in 1995 the work of this group of architects, artists and activists has focussed on localized interventions, highlighting supposedly marginal, urban processes in the peripheries of towns and cities.
Stalker aims to use this archive as a catalyst for new actions and as a means to explore relationships to the sites of those actions—interweaving memories of experiences and the experience of those memories. The “nomadic” archive presents the collective’s walks and research trips through indeterminate territories in turmoil—between European and Mediterranean culture, between art and the city, between formation and transformation. It is grounded in communal projects, of the kind that have been conducted in these places for many years now by artists, researchers and local residents.
Stalker invites students at the ETH Zürich to pool memories, evidence, documents and materials relating to those actions and thus to contribute to the archive. It also welcomes those who have no personal memories of those actions but who would like use the “memories” in the archive to widen their own experience. In 2012 Stalker took a trip to Naples with colleagues led by Professor Philip Ursprung and in 2014, together with gta Ausstellungen, presented The Walk—an exhibition in the form of an underground walk at the Hönggerberg campus of ETH Zurich.
Stalker’s Nomadic Archive was jointly initiated with the Istituto Svizzero di Roma, which also supports the project, in the frame of the Studio Roma program in 2016. It was presented in 2016 at Microclima / Serra dei Giardini during the Biennale Urbana in Venice and is now part of the seminar “live” run by Berit Seidel and Tim Klauser in the Ursprung Group.
