Schwarzescafé at Luma Westbau and gta exhibitions are happy to announce the exhibition with drawings of Smiljan Radić. The show is closely related to the exhibition Cloud '68—Paper Voice. Smiljan Radić's Collection of Radical Architecture, which can be seen at gta exhibitions on Hönggerberg until 18 May 2018.
La muerte en casa / Death at Home is a project by the Chilean architect Smiljan Radić, which deals with the temporal and spatial structure of the mausoleum. Developed at the same time as the 2014 Serpentine Pavilion—which in turn can be characterized as a kind of folly (an ornamental landscape architecture)—it reflects Radić's interest in idiosyncratic architecture and its atmospheric qualities, as described by Junichiro Tanizaki in In Praise of Shadows of 1933. At schwarzescafé a series of drawings on display which document Radić's design process. However, the drawings are not sterile plans, but rather artifacts in their own sense—a painterly approach to the densities of an architecture for a final resting place, that seems to float between ruin and monolith, between melancholy and devotion.
In the thematization of architecture as a protective shell, as a refuge, La muerte en casa / Death at Home can be seen as a continuation of the project The Boy Hidden in a Fish, which was shown in 2010 at the 12th Architecture Biennale in Venice.
The exhibition is part of the ongoing activation of schwarzescafé, which Heimo Zobernig designed for Luma Westbau in 2016. Schwarzescafé is a hybrid between a café, a library, an exhibition space and a projection room, which fulfills various functions depending on the type of presentation.
